The Historical Sarai: Taramati Baradari was constructed as a sarai (travelers' inn) within the Persian-style Ibrahim Bagh gardens. The name "Baradari" comes from the Persian word meaning "twelve doors," referring to the pavilion's distinctive architectural feature of having twelve doorways designed for optimal cross-ventilation.
According to popular attribution by the tourism department, the name traces back to the reign of Abdullah Qutb Shah, the seventh Sultan of Golconda. As an ode to his favorite courtesan, Taramati, the Sultan is said to have named the sarai after her.
💃 The Legends of Taramati & Premamati
The tourism department promotes the location through romantic stories linking the then-Sultan with a courtesan named Taramati. While there are no recorded historical reports to confirm these tales, they continue to captivate visitors and add to the mystical charm of the pavilion.
🎵 The Carried Voice: One popular story goes that during the reign of Abdullah Qutb Shah, the Sultan used to hear Taramati's voice as she sang for travelers at the sarai, while he sat two kilometers away at Golconda Fort. Her melodious voice was said to be carried by the breeze, reaching the prince's ear at the fort.
🪢 The Dancing Sisters: Another enchanting fable tells of two ravishing dancing sisters, Taramati and Premamati, who danced on ropes tied between their pavilion and the balcony of the king and patron, Abdullah Qutub Shah. As a tribute to Taramati and Premamati, both were buried in the royal cemetery of the Qutub Shahi kings, alongside the monarchs they once entertained.
About half a mile north of Golconda Fort lies the royal necropolis, where the Qutub Shahi kings and queens lie buried amid what were once their rose gardens. Here, Taramati and Premamati are said to rest as well—a testament to their high regard in the royal court.
