📊 Total Road Network & Future Vision
Telangana's Roads & Buildings Department currently maintains 32,445 km of roads (State Highways: 27,461 km + National Highways: 4,983 km). There are no fully operational National Expressways yet, but the Khammam–Devarapalli section marks the beginning of access-controlled expressway culture in the state.
⚡ NH 365BB (Suryapet – Devarapalle) will radically reduce travel time between key industrial nodes. The 162 km segment inside Telangana is being built to global expressway standards (120 km/h design speed).
🛣️ NH 44, NH 163, NH 63 Widening: Multiple stretches are being upgraded to 4/6 lanes under Bharatmala Pariyojana.
🚄 Expressways vs National Highways – Context
Expressways are India’s highest class of roads, with controlled-access, grade-separated interchanges, and max speed of 120 km/h. National highways permit flyover access at intersections with design speeds up to 100 km/h. As of July 2023, India had 5,579 km expressway operational, while Telangana’s first exclusive expressway is under construction: NH-365BG (Khammam–Devarapalli Expressway), part of the larger 221 km Suryapet–Devarapalle project.
Meanwhile, key NH stretches in Telangana like Hyderabad ORR (National Highway) function with near-expressway features, but official expressway tag is yet to be achieved.
🔄 Other Major Updates & Declarations
- Hyderabad Regional Ring Road (RRR) – officially declared as National Highway, enhancing orbital connectivity around Hyderabad.
- NH 63 Armoor–Mancherial corridor – 4-laning proposed by NHAI to decongest industrial traffic.
- NH 163 widening – Critical for Warangal and Mulugu tourism & mining corridors.
- Bharatmala Phase-II includes multiple Telangana links: the approved 2,776 km list set to be implemented in phases by 2028.

✅ Data compiled from latest government reports, March 2023 – May 2026 projections. Some sanctioned km have achieved DPR completion. Expressway status as per NHAI annual report 2025.
📈 Summary: Telangana’s national highway length has doubled since 2014, and with 2,776 km of new NHs approved and the first expressway under construction, the state is poised for a quantum leap in road infrastructure. The addition of access-controlled corridors will boost economic growth, reduce logistics costs, and enhance safety.
