📜 History – From Lal Bahadur Shastri to Uppal

🏗️ Need for a New Stadium: Prior to the construction of the current stadium, the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in the Fateh Maidan sports complex at Basheerbagh was used to host domestic and international cricket matches in Hyderabad. Between 1955 and 2003, the stadium hosted 3 Test matches and 14 One Day Internationals.

However, the ground belonged to the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (now Sports Authority of Telangana State), and HCA had limited operating autonomy. Additionally, due to its smaller size, it came to be known as a high-scoring ground, and Hyderabad was not considered for many high-profile cricket matches.

Construction (2003-2005): In 2003, the proposal for a new stadium was submitted by HCA to the government of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, then headed by N. Chandrababu Naidu. The proposal was quickly cleared, and HCA was allocated a budget. The government also identified a large piece of land suitable for the project at Uppal.

Naming Controversy – Visakha to Rajiv Gandhi: Most of the funding came after an open auction of the stadium's title was held. Visaka Industries Limited won the auction with a bid price of ₹65 crores. A sum of ₹43 crores was paid in advance, and the stadium was named "Visakha International Cricket Stadium" in 2004.

📛 Renaming After Rajiv Gandhi: By 2005, when most of the stadium was built, it was ready to host its first ODI match between India and South Africa. However, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, decided to rename the stadium to Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in memory of the former Prime Minister of India. Following this decision, HCA was contractually required to pay Visaka Industries six times the contract price. However, following negotiations, HCA paid only the original contract price of ₹43 crores.

End Names – Honoring Legends: The ends are named Pavilion End and North End. On the retirement of VVS Laxman, the HCA decided to honor the veteran by naming the North End after him.

⚠️ 2025 Land Dispute: In July 2025, reports emerged that a private company began constructing walls around several of the stadium's gates. The company had reportedly purchased land surrounding the stadium, including roads used for entry and exit and areas previously designated for parking. Five of the stadium's 11 gates were walled off. The Hyderabad Cricket Association has yet to issue an official response regarding the matter.
