π° Falaknuma Palace
The "Mirror of the Sky" – Hyderabad's Celestial Jewel
A Palace Born from a Dream: Falaknuma Palace stands as one of the finest palaces in Hyderabad, originally belonging to the Paigah family – a noble lineage that served as the premier aristocracy of the Hyderabad State. Later, it became the cherished property of the Nizam of Hyderabad, the wealthiest monarch of his time.
The palace was built by Nawab Sir Viqar-ul-Umra, the Prime Minister of Hyderabad State and the uncle and brother-in-law of the sixth Nizam, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan. Inspired by his travels to Europe, he envisioned a residence that would rival the grandest palaces of the continent.
π Quick Facts: Construction began on 3 March 1884 and was completed in 1893 at a cost of ₹4 million (equivalent to approximately ₹1.8 billion or US$22 million today). The palace covers a 13-hectare (32-acre) area and has a built-up area of 93,971 square meters (1,011,500 sq ft).
π️ Architectural Marvel – A Scorpion in Italian Marble
The palace was designed by English architect William Ward Marrett and is constructed entirely from Italian marble, featuring stunning stained-glass windows that cast a spectrum of colors into the rooms.
π¦ The Scorpion Design: When viewed from above, the palace is shaped like a scorpion with two stings spread out as wings in the north – a design symbolizing power and protection. The middle section houses the main building and kitchen, while the Gol Bangla, Zenana Mehal, and harem quarters stretch to the south.
The architecture is a rare and exquisite blend of Italian and Tudor influences, reflecting the Nawab's extensive travels through Europe. At the time of its completion in 1893, it was the tallest building in Hyderabad.
Other architectural highlights include:
- A magnificent marble staircase with carved balustrades supporting marble figurines holding candelabra]
- 40 Venetian chandeliers with 138 arms each – the largest collection of its kind
- Hand-painted ceiling frescoes that create optical illusions in the entranceway
- A cantilevered marble staircase that was an architectural marvel for its time
- One of the largest electrical switchboards in India, introduced in 1883
π The Grand Library – A Windsor Castle Replica
One of the palace's most remarkable features is its library, which is a replica of the one at Windsor Castle. The library boasts a carved walnut roof and houses one of the finest collections of books and manuscripts in India.
π Literary Treasure Trove: The library contains over 6,000 books, including rare first editions, an original Encyclopedia Britannica gifted by King George V, and extensive collections in English, Urdu, and Persian. It also held one of the finest collections of the Quran in India.
Fascinatingly, the library still maintains a record of every royal guest who ever visited the palace – a living chronicle of the illustrious figures who walked its halls.
π½️ The World's Largest Dining Table
The palace's dining hall is legendary, featuring what is considered the world's largest dining table, capable of seating 101 guests at once. The table is 80 feet long and made from seven separate pieces of wood.
π Royal Dining Experience: The chairs are made of carved rosewood with green leather upholstery. The tableware was made of gold and crystal, accompanied by fluted music. It is said that the Nizam used paintings on the wall as his "menu," simply pointing to the dish he wanted served. The hall was built with such perfect acoustics that a whisper at one end could be heard clearly at the other.
πΉ The Ballroom – A World Unique Organ
The ballroom contains a two-ton manually operated organ – said to be the only one of its kind in the world. This remarkable instrument requires manual operation and remains a testament to the engineering marvels of the 19th century.
The billiards room features a unique distinction: Burroughs and Watts from England designed two identical billiards tables – one resides in Buckingham Palace, and the other graces the Falaknuma Palace.
π The Nizam's Treasures
Falaknuma Palace houses some of the finest collections of the Nizam's treasures, including:
- A jade collection considered unique in the world
- Rare paintings, statues, and antique furniture
- Precious manuscripts and books spanning centuries
- Handcrafted tapestries and brocade from France
- Venetian chandeliers and intricate frescoes throughout
π History – From Paigah Pride to Nizam's Guest House
Sir Viqar-ul-Umra used the palace as his private residence until a fateful visit changed its destiny forever. In the spring of 1897, the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Mahboob Ali Khan, was invited to stay. The Nizam extended his stay from a week to a fortnight and then to a month. Seeing his sovereign's affection for the palace, Sir Viqar offered it to him as a Nazar (offering) .
π Royal Guest House: The Nizam used Falaknuma Palace as a royal guest house for distinguished visitors to the Kingdom of Hyderabad. The list of illustrious guests includes King George V, Queen Mary, Edward VIII, and Tsar Nicholas II. The last important guest was the President of India, Rajendra Prasad, in 1951.
The palace fell into disuse after the 1950s and remained largely silent for nearly five decades – a sleeping beauty waiting to be awakened.
π¨ Magnificent Restoration – A Decade of Devotion
In 2000, Taj Hotels (part of the Tata Group) took on the monumental task of restoring the palace to its former glory. The restoration was managed under the watchful eye of Princess Esra Jah, the first wife of the eighth Nizam, who insisted that every detail be returned to its original splendor.
π ️ Restoration by the Numbers: Nearly 1,000 skilled artisans labored for a decade to complete the restoration. The project brought an investment of approximately $15 million. The restored palace reopened in November 2010 as the Taj Falaknuma Palace.
π³ The Gardens – Mughal, Rajasthani & Japanese
The palace is surrounded by manicured lawns dotted with a stunning fusion of garden styles – Mughal, Rajasthani, and Japanese gardens. These serene spaces offer breathtaking panoramic views of Hyderabad, especially at sunset when the city below begins to twinkle like stars, perfectly embodying the palace's name – "Mirror of the Sky".
