1000-Year-Old Idol: The Rama temple was built by the Vengi kings in the 13th century, but the idol itself is believed to be over 1000 years old. The temple has been a witness to centuries of history, surviving invasions and the passage of time.
Kodanda Rama – Marking Lord Rama's Journey: The temple is a Kodanda Rama temple, a designation given only to temples built in places where Sri Rama travelled or stayed during his 14 years of exile. 🎨 A Masterpiece of Chalukyan-Rajasthani Fusion: The gali gopuram is a magnificent work of art that rises 80 feet into the air. Though similar to other gali gopurams in South India like those at Hampi and Tirupati, the one at Ammapalli is leaner and more dramatic. It is a combination of limestone plaster, baked bricks, and stucco, giving it a unique appearance.

Seshashayee Vishnu – The Sleeping Lord: Above the gateway of the tower is a large image of Lord Vishnu in a sleeping posture (Seshashayee Vishnu), adding to the temple's artistic and spiritual richness.
Preservation and Restoration: The gali gopuram and the walking path around the temple are later-day additions, built in the 17th century, while the inner sanctum sanctorum is the earliest structure. Dasavataram on the Makarathorana: The unique aspect of this Rama idol is that the makarathorana has small idols which are representative of the Dasavataram (the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu). The gopuram over the idols is a smaller structure but with greater detailing of the temple iconography, which remains intact despite its age.
Abhaya Anjaneya – Hanuman's Promise: While there is no Hanuman idol next to Rama, there is an 'Abhaya Anjaneya' (a form of Hanuman granting protection) sculpted into the Dwaja Stambham (flag pillar) opposite the inner sanctum. It is believed that on command from Rama, Hanuman will fulfil all the wishes that devotees ask for here.

Temple Grounds: Spread over 250 acres, the temple complex features tree-lined roads, manicured lawns, and clearly sectioned sandy areas leading from the archway to the main temple. Smaller temples dedicated to Shiva and Hanuman, a couple of mandapams, abandoned-looking structures, and the beautiful stepwell hidden in a grove of coconut trees add atmosphere to this ancient site.

🎥 Star of the Silver Screen: If there was one movie that would immediately bring this beautiful temple to mind, it is the 2001 blockbuster 'Murari' starring Mahesh Babu. Film Shooting Ban: A part of the temple's outer structure was damaged during a Telugu film shooting when an exploding car in a fight sequence crashed into the left side of the gali gopuram. The bright white 'prahari' (boundary wall) doubles up as a two-storeyed corridor with benches on the upper level built into it, serving as a viewing gallery for wedding guests.
