Central Schools – Excellence in Education Since 1963
📜 History & Organisation
The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), previously known as the Central School Organisation, was established on 15 December 1963 with the first Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi. It is a non‑profit body under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. All KVS schools are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
The administration functions at three levels: the Chairman (Minister of Education, GoI), the Deputy Chairman (Minister of State for Education), and the Commissioner of KVS who holds the executive power. The original objective was to serve children of Indian Defence Services personnel posted in remote locations; later it was extended to all central government employees. Today, KVS is one of the largest school chains in the world with 1,249 schools across India and three abroad.
