Statue of Equality, Hyderabad

A Monument to Equality: The Statue of Equality commemorates the 1,000-year birth anniversary of Sri Ramanujacharya (1017–1137 CE), a revered Vedic philosopher, social reformer, and one of the most important exponents of the Sri Vaishnava tradition. Known for his revolutionary teachings on equality and universal brotherhood, Ramanujacharya preached that all beings are equal regardless of caste, creed, or gender – a radical idea for his time that continues to inspire millions today.

The statue stands at an imposing 216 feet (66 meters) and is situated within the 45-acre JIVA Campus in Divya Saketam, about 40 km from Hyderabad. The campus houses a Vedic school, a Homeopathy Medical College, JIMS Hospital, Swamiji's Ashram, a Go Shala with 300 cows and calves, beautiful gardens, temples, and a 5-acre playground. The project was conceptualized by Chinna Jeeyar (Sri Tridandi Srimannarayana Ramanuja Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji) to revive the concept of equality in the world.

πŸ“œ Sri Ramanujacharya (1017–1137 CE) – The Social Reformer

πŸ•‰️ Birth and Early Life: Ramanuja, also called Ramanujacharya or Ilaiya Perumal (Tamil for "Ageless Perumal/God"), was born in 1017 CE in Sriperumbudur, India. At the age of sixteen, he married Rakshakambal. He studied under the famed guru Yadava Prakash in Kanchi, who was a supporter of the doctrines of the earlier acharya Adi Shankaracharya. However, Ramanuja began to reject some of the central doctrines taught by his master, leading to a deep philosophical divide.

Ramanuja's Teachings – Visishtadvaita (Modified Non-Dualism): During the 12th century, Hindu theologians debated the nature of God and the relationship between God, the human soul, and physical matter. Two major positions existed:

  • Monism (Advaita Vedanta): Preached by Adi Shankaracharya, this view held that there is a fundamental oneness to everything in creation, including God. God has no form, no characteristics, and no name – making devotion meaningless.
  • Dualism (Dvaita): Later taught by Madhvacharya (c. 1199–1276 CE), this view held that God is completely distinct and separate from physical matter.

Ramanuja's position was a blend of these two views, known as Visishtadvaita or "modified non-dualism". He believed that:

  • God does have form and characteristics – intelligence, truth, and infinity
  • The physical world is not an illusion – it is real and created by God
  • Every soul is a "particle" of God, designed to serve God
  • Each soul has free will – otherwise, service to God would be meaningless

πŸ’– The Bhakti Movement – Ramanuja's Revolutionary Contribution

Both Ramanuja and his successor Madhvacharya were strong supporters of the Bhakti movement, a loosely organized movement of Hindu sects that emerged in medieval India. The word bhakti comes from the Sanskrit word bhaj, meaning "to revere or adore" – a total, intense devotion to God. It was through bhakti that Indian people overcame divisions of birth, caste, gender, and race to become a united people.

In practicing complete devotion to God, Ramanuja and his followers put aside the rituals and animal sacrifices of ancient traditions. The bhakti movements instead relied on an intense worship of a separate, identifiable God. He was a proponent of prabattimarga or self-surrender to God and preached bhakti redemption, welcoming underprivileged people to Vaishnavism.

⚠️ The Conspiracy to Kill Ramanuja: Yadava Prakash, Ramanuja's guru, grew angry and began to see Ramanuja as a threat to his beliefs. His anger grew until he conspired with a group of his younger students to kill Ramanuja. He planned a pilgrimage to the sacred Ganges river and invited Ramanuja to join. Ramanuja agreed but brought his cousin, Govinda. After the party arrived, Yadava's students told Govinda of their plan. Shocked, Govinda informed his cousin and urged him to flee. Govinda then returned to the group and claimed his cousin had been attacked and dragged away by a tiger. After Govinda's deception, Ramanuja made his way back to Kanchi. Months later, Yadava and his students returned from their pilgrimage and were astonished to find Ramanuja there, conducting his school as before. They gave up their plans to kill him.

πŸ“– Literary Works – The Navrathnas (Nine Gems)

Sri Ramanujacharya authored nine scriptures known as the Navrathnas, which form the foundation of the Sri Vaishnava tradition:

  • Vedartha-Sangraha – Concepts of Visishtadvaita
  • Sri Bhashya – Comprehensive commentary on the Vedanta Sutras (his magnum opus)
  • Gita-Bhasya – In-depth analysis of the Bhagavad-Gita
  • Vedanta-Dipa – Synopsis of the Vedanta Sutras
  • Vedanta-Sara – Concise commentary on Vedanta Sutras for beginners
  • Saranagati-Gadyam – Prayer of complete surrender to Lord Srimannarayana
  • Sriranga-Gadyam – Self-surrender manuals to Lord Vishnu
  • Sri Vaikunta-Gadyam – Describes Vaikuntha Loka and the status of freed souls
  • Nitya-Grantha – Guidebook for daily prayer and activities

🀝 Social Contributions – Equality for All

🌟 A Revolutionary Social Reformer: Ramanuja's ultimate goal was to instill the Vedic way of life throughout society. He accepted the untouchables (Dalits) and treated them as special. Seeing his love for the afflicted, his guru bestowed upon him the coveted title "Em-perum-ana" – meaning "you are ahead of us." Subjugated classes were given the term Thirukkulathar – "Born Divine" – by Sri Ramanuja.

Key Social Messages of Ramanujacharya:

  • Shed your ego. Serve all beings as service to God
  • Serve society which is the universal form of God
  • Nobody is infallible
  • Do not humiliate anyone
  • What is of supreme importance is purity of mind and deed
